Your Family - Your Past

Wouldn't it be wonderful to know your lineage?
Where your family came from? Who were your ancestors? What they looked like?

The Starting Point

The best way to start you family tree research is with yourself. Take a moment to write your personal information, your full name, birth date, schools you went to, places you lived, and jobs you have held. You also may want to add medical information to the list. Now do the same for your spouse and your children. This information is for you and future family and genealogists. But for now, you shouldn't share your personal information with others. The only exception to this is if you are searching for adoption information. Next, add your Parents and Grandparents. Once you have done this it is time to get in contact with your family. Try to locate your oldest relation. This could be your Grandparents, Great Aunt or Uncle, or even your Parents. Ask them the information listed below and see what turns up!

Some Questions to Ask
  • Names (including nicknames), Birth Dates and Locations
  • Schools, Other Residence, Careers, Hobbies and Interests
  • Were there members of the Military, Social Groups, or Organizations?
  •  What Religion or Church, if any? Is there a Family Bible or Register?
  • Medical Information (Still Births, Miscarriages, Causes of Death, ect.)
  • Documentation (Newspapers, Licenses, Photos, Letters, Deeds, ect.)
  • Family Origins and Dates (Countries, States, Migrations, ect.)
